Enhanced oil recovery
The MGSC is engaged in three Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) field validation tests to assess potential for CO2 storage in oil in the Illinois Basin. Each field validation test had extensive monitoring for air, shallow groundwater, and oil and water produced from oil reservoirs, to provide data to enhance understanding of the fate of injected CO2. Determining the CO2 injection and storage capability of mature oil fields provides valuable information about the potential for enhancing recovery of the more than 1.3 billion barrels (206 million m3) of EOR resources remaining in the Illinois Basin.
