MGSC Projects

The Illinois Basin offers tremendous potential for the safe, long-term storage of carbon dioxide. Since 2005, the MGSC and its partners have been exploring this potential, using a multi-phase approach that began with pilot-scale enhanced oil recovery and coalbed methane storage projects. In addition to these limited explorations, the MGSC has been developing a large-scale demonstration project, which is designed to store one million tonnes of CO2 in the Mt. Simon Sandstone, a deep saline reservoir. Here, you can learn more about the three different types of geological sequestration, and the projects we have been conducting to determine their potential for our future carbon storage needs.
